Orange Bay from Safaga: Snorkeling, First Dive & Parasailing
You go under to look at a reef, and come up having become a diver.
You picked the quiet end of the Red Sea coast. Safaga and Soma Bay are flat water, low buildings and very little hurry, which is exactly why one day like this one earns its place. A morning pickup, a transfer to the boat, and by mid-morning the Giftun islands are ahead of you with a whole Red Sea day still to spend.
The first reef takes the noise out of everything. You slide in with mask and fins, the surface closes over your ears, and the world above — the engine, the talking, the plan for the day — thins to a hum. Below you a coral wall goes about its own business: butterflyfish grazing, a wrasse patrolling its patch, light moving in slow bands across the sand. Time stops being something you check.
Then your instructor asks whether you want to go further, and this is the part people are still talking about at the airport. No licence, no course — a few minutes of practice in shallow water, a hand on your arm, and then the strange moment when you breathe out below the surface and simply stay there. Most people spend years assuming diving belongs to other people. It takes about ten minutes at a Red Sea reef to find out that was never true.
There is white sand on Orange Island afterwards, a buffet lunch on deck with the drinks coming steadily, and a parachute flight thirty to forty metres up where the islands finally resolve into shapes. But the ride back is quiet in a particular way. You left your hotel in the morning as somebody who snorkels. You are going back as somebody who has breathed underwater.
