Sahl Hasheesh: Orange Island by Private Speedboat & Parasail
Twenty minutes out of Sahl Hasheesh the engine cuts, and the reef below you belongs to nobody else.
Most people meet Orange Island from the rail of a crowded day boat, waiting their turn at the ladder. You are going the other way. The speedboat at the marina is booked for your group alone, and the moment the ropes come off, the coast starts falling away behind you.
Twenty minutes out, the engine cuts and the noise goes with it. You drop over the side into water so clear the hull seems to float on nothing, and the reef rises to meet you — parrotfish working the coral, a shoal opening and closing around your hands, the seabed tilting away into deeper blue. Time behaves strangely down there. You surface, move to the second reef, and lose another half hour the same way.
Then the harness goes on, the line pays out, and the sea you have just been inside of opens up beneath you — the reefs you snorkelled, the white curve of the island, your own boat a small bright shape below. Most of a holiday runs on somebody else's clock: buffet hours, coach times, a boat that leaves when the last passenger is aboard. For these few hours, nothing is queued and nothing is shared.
You are back on the sand by mid-afternoon with salt drying on your skin and most of the day still in front of you — the quiet advantage of doing it this way. The island still gets its hour and a half, the reefs still get their two stops, the sky still gets its ten minutes. What stays with you is the moment the engine cut and the Red Sea went completely quiet.
