Turkish Hammam and Spa Programs from Makadi Bay, with Massage
Heat first, then the glove, then the mask, and only then the massage: the hammam in its proper order.
Overview
A week in Makadi Bay tends to run on somebody else's clock. Breakfast before the queue, the water park by ten, the reef when the wind drops, dinner at whatever hour the youngest can manage. It is a good week, and by the middle of it you have not had a single hour that belonged to you. Soul Spa Wellness Club sits inside the TK Royal in the InterContinental district of Hurghada, about forty minutes north along the coast road, and the drive is written into the booking: a driver takes you from the lobby and brings you back to it. Every program on this page begins the same way, with heat.
You sit in the hammam while warm steam works through you, slowly, until the shoulders come down from around your ears. Then the glove: a full body scrub, brisk and methodical and mildly shocking the first time, followed by a rinse that leaves you several layers lighter than you went in. The dry sauna, the herbal steam room and the jacuzzi sit between treatments, used in whatever order you feel like. Every program ends the same way as well, in a quiet room, with a full-body massage.
The five programs differ mainly in what is worked into your skin and how long the whole thing lasts. The Turkish hammam is the plain original, milk mask and foam, about two hours. Cleopatra puts coconut soap where the milk was and adds a face mask; the Moroccan turns to coffee soap and a coffee scrub, which smells exactly as good as it sounds. Above them sit two rituals of two and a half hours, halved between bathing and massage: the Ramses, which sends you through a second hammam as well as the first, and the Chocolate, whose scrub is cocoa and coconut.
The bay is a closed world, which is most of its appeal and also the reason an afternoon like this has to be decided on rather than wandered into. There is no gate to slip out of and no hammam down the road. Booking it from Makadi Bay turns the whole thing into one arrangement, hotel to hammam and back, and hands you the only appointment of the week that nobody else is invited to.
None of this is a modern idea. The hammam is how this part of the world has bathed for centuries, heat first, then the scrub, then the long rest, and the order has survived because it does what it says. What a hammam program really offers is not a list of treatments but a change of pace: two hours or more with nothing else scheduled, the phone left behind, and only one thing left to decide, which is how much pressure you want.
