The museum sits on the Giza plateau's edge — about 2 km from the Pyramids and 15 km from downtown Cairo — with direct day trips from every major resort town.
20–45 minutes by taxi or Uber from downtown Cairo depending on traffic. There is no metro station within walking distance yet, so ride-hailing, hotel transfer or a guided tour with pickup are the practical options.
Hurghada is about 450 km away: roughly 5.5 hours by road or a 1-hour flight to Cairo (HRG–CAI). Organised day trips handle hotel pickup, transfers and tickets in one booking.

The single biggest reason to visit: the boy king's complete burial treasure, reunited under one roof for the first time since Howard Carter opened the tomb in 1922.
The dedicated Tutankhamun galleries display more than 5,000 objects from the tomb — the iconic golden funerary mask, nested golden shrines, thrones, chariots, jewellery and even the king's sandals — arranged to walk you through his life, death and burial.
The Tutankhamun suite is ticketed by time slot and gets crowded from mid-morning. Go first thing or in the evening session, allow 60–90 minutes for these galleries alone, and consider a guide — the curation rewards context about hieroglyphs and New Kingdom history.
For a century the collection was split between Tahrir Square, storerooms and touring exhibitions. The GEM reunites every object from tomb KV62 — the most complete royal burial ever found — in one purpose-built suite.

The museum's spine is a monumental staircase lined with 87 royal statues, sarcophagi and architectural pieces, climbing chronologically through Egyptian history. At the top, a picture window frames the Pyramids of Giza — the single best photo spot in the building.
An 11-metre, 83-tonne red granite statue of Ramesses II greets every visitor in the soaring entrance atrium. Twice a year, around late February and late October, sunlight aligns to illuminate the pharaoh's face — an echo of the solar alignments at Abu Simbel.
Buried beside the Great Pyramid 4,500 years ago and rediscovered in 1954, the roughly 43-metre cedar ship of King Khufu is the world's oldest intact large vessel. It was moved to the GEM in a purpose-built museum wing — a remarkable feat of engineering in itself.
Floor-to-ceiling windows align the main galleries with the Giza plateau, so you study 5,000-year-old artifacts with the Pyramids of Giza on the horizon. The rooftop and terrace restaurants share the same panorama.
The kilometre-long alabaster-toned facade is lit from within after sunset, echoing the triangular geometry of the pyramids behind it. Evening sessions (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) are the time to see it — and the galleries are quieter too.
Announced in 2002, the museum's design was chosen through one of the largest architecture competitions ever held — 1,557 entries from 82 countries — won by Dublin-based Heneghan Peng Architects with a plan of triangular geometry aligned to the pyramids. Two decades of construction followed, including one of the world's largest archaeological conservation centers, where artifacts were restored before going on display, and landscaped desert gardens across the 50-hectare site. After phased soft openings of the main entrance, atrium and twelve chronological galleries, the completed museum — Tutankhamun galleries included — opened in November 2025.
The GEM is built for a full day out — restaurants with pyramid views, museum-quality shopping and family-friendly galleries.
Several restaurants and cafés are spread across the complex — from the Panorama Restaurant with direct pyramid views to the casual Pharaoh's Café in the main atrium and an outdoor terrace by the gardens. Prices are tourist-level but the views are unmatched.
The main gift shop sells museum-quality replicas — including Tutankhamun's golden mask and a detailed replica of the Rosetta Stone — alongside hand-painted papyrus, Egyptian-inspired jewellery and the official GEM coffee-table book.
Interactive digital displays and educational workshops make the galleries genuinely engaging for children, while the on-site conservation center — one of the largest archaeological laboratories in the world — restores artifacts behind the scenes.
The museum is fully wheelchair-accessible with ramps and elevators throughout. Security screening applies at entry, large bags must be checked, and the vast halls mean comfortable shoes are essential — the desert gardens alone cover a large part of the 50-hectare site.
